Calculate a digital gain change and sample-peak headroom, then interpret the limits of the result.
Objective: Separate a mathematical level shift from preamp gain and a recording decision.

Compare two sample peaks
This is a simple linear digital gain model with a conventional 0 dBFS sample-peak ceiling. It is not LUFS, true-peak estimation, analog preamp calibration or a promise that clipped audio can be repaired.
Enter your two sample-peak values, then calculate.
Formulas and practical limitations
Required gain (dB) = desired peak − input peak. Estimated resulting peak = input peak + required gain. Headroom to 0 dBFS = 0 − resulting peak. A −18 dBFS input moved to −12 dBFS requires +6 dB and leaves 12 dB of sample-peak headroom in this model.
A digital gain change after conversion does not change the analog signal that reached the preamp or converter. It cannot undo earlier clipping. Floating-point processing/files can represent values beyond the conventional ceiling, but converters, fixed-point delivery and later processing still need attention. This tool does not model those systems or prescribe a noise floor; −200 dBFS is a worksheet input limit.
